The Colditz Cock is presented here by Ultimate Holding Company as part of our installation for Tatton Park Biennial 2012; Cartland Institute for Romance Research (CIFRR).
CIFRR synthesises into new work the relationships between Dame Barbara Cartland, war time aviation, Tatton Park and 1990s British politics. A prolific writer of romantic fiction, Cartland was a formidable woman, instrumental in the development of the troop carrying glider (stationed at Tatton), Conservative ‘Back to Basics’ policy and promoting the rights of children and travellers.
The book is inspired by the works of Barbara Cartland and tells the story of Mary, a British woman trapped in war torn Germany. After an unexpected encounter with a British airman, they create a daring escape plan echoing the true story of the famous glider built by prisoners of war at Colditz. A sub-plot imagines the British War Cabinet stationed at Tatton, fighting to win the war.
The story draws on real people and events to create an imagined account of aviation, romance, escape and wartime Tatton.
You can enjoy this book in conjunction with a visit to the Biennial or as a journey into romance in its own right.
